Armed barricaded suspect in Rancho Palos Verdes surrenders

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. (KABC) -- A man was taken into custody after he forced his way into his parents' Palos Verdes home, armed himself with a handgun and fired several shots during an hourslong barricade on Monday.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department special weapons team responded to a disturbance call in the 6400 block of Sea Cove Drive at about 6 a.m.

Officials learned the suspect, identified as Paul David Carriere, 36, had unexpectedly arrived at his parents' home and obtained a handgun. He began firing shots at some point, and family members inside were able to safely escape, sheriff's officials said.

Carriere soon after escaped from the house through a window and was found by deputies in the 6500 block of Seacove Drive, after several calls were received regarding a man with a gun.

He was spotted by a sheriff's helicopter in the backyard of a home, pointing a handgun at his temple.

Meantime, several surrounding homes were evacuated as a crisis negotiation team assisted in helping bring the situation to a peaceful resolution.

The sheriff department's special weapons team eventually made their way into the property, and Carriere surrendered when flash bang grenades were deployed, officials said.

Carriere placed the gun on the ground and was taken into custody by SWAT team members.

After more than four hours of the barricade, Carriere was booked at Lomita Sheriff's Station on multiple charges, including burglary, discharging a firearm in a negligent manner and weapons violations.

No one was injured during the incident, and displaced residents returned to their homes, officials said.
