TORRANCE, Calif. (KABC) -- Toyota announced the recall of approximately 50,000 model year 2014 Highlander and Highlander hybrid SUVS on Thursday.

A software glitch may prevent the vehicle from properly calculating the size of the front passenger when determining whether to deploy the air bags. Affected vehicles are assuming the passenger is smaller, so bags may not fire, or may fire at lower speed than necessary for a larger passenger.

Toyota said 45,287 affected vehicles were sold in the United States. About 3,400 were sold in Canada, and the rest were sold in Mexico and Europe, according to Toyota.

Detailed information is available to customers at toyota.com/recall and by calling the Toyota Customer Experience Center at (800) 331-4331.
