PALMDALE, Calif. (KABC) -- The Palmdale Aerospace Academy's Robotics program began just two years ago, but the fledgling team has already won first place in a world competition.

"Our whole team was just jumping up screaming when we found out that we just won the whole thing," student Devin Balcorta said.

The 35-member student team won big at a Saturday competition in St. Louis called FIRST, or For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.

The team says the judges chose their robot, because of its special design features and its efficiency during a recycling competition.
