LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A rare blue flawless diamond worth nearly $26 million was unveiled at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County Saturday.

The so-called Blue Moon Diamond was just unearthed at the beginning of the year and is on loan to the museum, which houses gem stones of every size and shape.

"It's a very special vivid blue, and then it's internally flawless, that's important to us," said Suzette Gomes, CEO of Cora International.

Twelve carats of flawless blue diamond perfection cut to shine and sparkle from almost every angle. Purchased by supplier Cora International, the diamond was mined in South Africa and actually started out as 29.6 carats of rough stone.

The diamond, which is being kept behind giant steel doors, will be on display through Jan. 6.
