Lana Del Rey called out by Frances Bean Cobain for romanticizing death, singer responds

LOS ANGELES -- Frances Bean Cobain, daughter of late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, called out singer Lana Del Rey in a series of tweets for seemingly romanticizing death in a recent interview.

During her interview with journalist Tim Jonze for the U.K. newspaper The Guardian, the singer, who was promoting her latest album "Ultraviolence,' was asked why she thought so many of her music "icons" -- like Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse -- have died young. Del Rey responded that she did not know why.

Jonze later followed up with the question, "Is it [dying young] something that you would see as glamorous attractive? That's quite a dark question to ask, but like, is there like a fantasy of dying young yourself that you could subscribe to?"

Del Rey responded, "Um, yeah. I mean, you know, I wish I was dead already."

There was some controversy with the interview because the singer, whose real name is Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, later reportedly wrote in a series of tweets that have since been deleted that she regretted trusting the Guardian and that Jonze's questions were "leading" and "calculated." Jonze responded by posting the audio from the interview on the newspaper's website and standing by his original article.

It was Del Rey's quote that caught Frances' attention and she tweeted to Del Rey on Sunday, June 22, "@LanaDelRey the death of young musicians isn't something to romanticize."

Frances added in another tweet, "'ll never know my father because he died young & it becomes a desirable feat because ppl like u think it's 'cool.'"

"Well, it's [expletive] not. Embrace life, because u only get one life," Frances continued (Warning: Link contains expletive). "The ppl u mentioned wasted that life. Don't be 1 of those ppl."

Kurt Cobain died on April 5, 1994 at the age of 27. Frances was only 19 months old at the time of his death. She went on to tell Del Rey, "ur too talented to waste it away."

She clarified in another tweet, "I'm not attacking anyone. I have no animosity towards Lana, I was just trying to put things in perspective from personal experience."

Del Rey responded to Frances on Monday, June 23, "It's all good. He was asking me a lot a out your dad I said I liked him because he was talented not because he died young-"

The singer added, "The other half of what I said wasn't really related to the people he mentioned/ I don't find that part of music glam either."
