Brittany Maynard, the terminally ill woman and death with dignity advocate, ended her own life this past Sunday. In a recent interview, Maynard's husband Dan Diaz discussed his relationship with his "special wife."

"She's just a great person to know; a good person to be around: attractive, energetic and outgoing and just a personality you really get attracted to," Diaz told PEOPLE in an interview published on Tuesday.

Diaz, 43, proposed to Maynard in May 2012, and they were married for a little more than two years before Maynard's death. Diaz, who works in the food industry, had been a bachelor for many years before he met Maynard.

"For me it was meeting the person I fell in love with and that was Brittany . . . jokingly, she would say I'd certainly been single long enough because there was an age difference between us," Diaz told PEOPLE. "And 'What's taken me so long?' and my answer was, honestly, that I hadn't met the girl for me until Brittany."

The couple was married on September 29, 2012 at Beltane Ranch in California's Sonoma Valley. Maynard was diagnosed with a fatal brain tumor in January, and her health struggle made national headlines as she opted to end her own life.

After her diagnosis, Diaz, Maynard, Maynard's mother Debbie Ziegler and her stepfather Gary Holmes moved to Portland, Oregon where assisted suicide is legal. In October, Maynard launched an online video campaign with the organization Compassion & Choices, advocating for the death with dignity movement.

In October, Diaz and Maynard crossed off items on her "bucket list," including traveling to the Grand Canyon.
