If insomnia makes it difficult for people to fall asleep, hypersomnia is the opposite problem. It makes it hard for people to wake up.
Researchers at Emory University's Sleep Center studying hypersomnia found that a possible cause may be in the cerebrospinal fluid.
About 75 percent of patients who went to the sleep center complaining of hypersomnia tested positive for a peptide in the cerebrospinal fluid that mimics the effect of sleeping pills or anesthesia.
A new drug approved to treat an overdose of sedatives may help. Flumazenil comes in lotion or lozenge forms.
