LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Men are more likely to do regular maintenance on their vehicles than they are on their own bodies, but doctors say there are a few subtle health signs men should not ignore.

Bill Nation, owner of Pro Italia Motorcycles in Glendale, says he is in the business of selling fun. When he's not feeling his best, he tries to keep on top of his health - but a lot of his customers don't.

"Some of these guys maintain their motorcycles much better than they maintain themselves," Nation said.

"It's true. Men just don't come in for routine checkups," said Dr. Elliot Felman of Providence Saint John's Health Center.

Felman said there are some symptoms men shouldn't ignore.

The first symptom is excessive snoring. It's a sign of sleep apnea. Felman said severe, loud snoring can indicate that you're not getting enough oxygen.

Nation said he sometimes wakes himself up with his snoring.

Sleep apnea can lead to many serious diseases, including heart failure.

Also, frequent urination worries many men. It can signal an enlarged prostate or diabetes.

Felman said you shouldn't ignore it, but it could just be fluid overload.

"Less caffeine, less alcohol, if they're doing that, and most men will find out that their symptoms will relax," he said.

Felman said one symptom you shouldn't waste any time with is black stool, which he said indicates colon cancer until proven otherwise. He said you should see a doctor to determine the cause as soon as possible.

He recommends colonoscopies starting at age 50 and earlier for those with a family history.

When Nation hears any of his bikes making an odd sound, he's sure to get it checked out. Now, he'll do the same for his snoring.

"Well, it may be nothing, but at least it gets out of your mind and also your loved one will not harangue you about it if it is something that's not to be concerned with," Nation said.

Just like your bike, you want an engine that purrs.
