Measles outbreak expands to 64 cases; most cases in California

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- There are now 64 confirmed cases of measles linked to an outbreak that started at Disneyland.

According to the California Department of Public Health, 50 of the infections are in California. The rest are in Washington, Arizona, Utah, Oregon, Colorado, Nebraska and Mexico.

Most of those infected at the park last month were not vaccinated.

Health officials have urged people to get the measles shot.

Measles is a contagious illness spread through the air by coughing and sneezing. It was largely eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, but it can enter the country from abroad.

The U.S. experienced a record number of measles cases last year, with 644 infections reported from 27 states.
