PEAR fitness gadget coaches you in real time
The PEAR fitness gadget takes monitoring to a new level with a real-time audio coach to ensure you stay on track.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- There's no shortage of high tech gadgets on the market to help you with your fitness goals.

They count steps, calories, even monitor sleep patterns. But one device takes things a step further, giving you an audio coach to ensure you stay on track.

"People are tracking all this data but what they don't know is what to do with that data, so at PEAR we're solving that," said marketing director Christian Schouf.

PEAR is another high tech tracker, but unlike the Fitbit or the Nike FuelBand, this gadget tells you what to do.

"My coach will interrupt me and say, 'Oh you're going to slow here,'" said marathoner Deena Kastor.

Deena and husband, Andrew Kastor, are marathon champs who coach in real life, but they appreciate the technology that can help people with fitness goals as they work out solo.

"The system tailors to your body, knows your fitness level and then it coaches you in real time," Schouf explained.

A 20-minute calibration with your PEAR gives it the data it needs to get you going. Take a GPS, Bluetooth heart rate monitor and algorhythms, you've got a personal coach in your ear monitoring speed, cadence, breathing, distance, and form checks.

Many of the programs help you track your heart rate and progress especially during cardio. But this particular technology can help you with workouts like kettle bells and even yoga.

"Kettle bells to spin bikes to running to standup yoga. We're doing hockey workouts. We have an Olympic kayaker at our office right now who's creating workouts for kayaking and paddling," said Schouf.

Kastor says many who exercise alone tend to train too hard, too fast. With this device, the coach in your ear helps you to take it to the right zone and effort level.

And apparently there is no excuse for being bored with your workout.

"I did the math the other day, there's enough workouts that you could do a workout every day for several years and never have to do the same one over," said Schouf.

The app is free, but the PEAR device will cost you about $100. That's on par with other trackers - minus the coaching component.
