10-month-old boy found dead in hot car at Austin Waffle House

AUSTIN, Texas -- Police said a 10-month-old child was found dead in a car at a Waffle House in southeast Austin.

According to an Austin police spokesperson, officers were dispatched around 2:45 p.m. Thursday to the 7800 block of Ben White Boulevard near the U.S. 183 interchange. They said an employee at the restaurant found the baby boy unconscious and not breathing in the vehicle.

"The car was not on, they didn't have to break a window or anything like that," Cpl. Chad Martinka with the Austin Police Department told ABC affiliate KVUE-TV. "They were able to unlock the door and get the child out."

According to police, the employee called 911 and brought the child inside the Waffle House where he or she tried to do CPR. When medics arrived, they also performed CPR on the child, but were not able to resuscitate him.

Police said they do not know how long the child was in the car, but they were able to find the driver of the car at the scene. They were still trying to establish the relationship between the driver and the child.

"Still trying to figure that out, person was obviously pretty upset so it's hard to get information at this time," said Martinka, adding that no charges have been filed at this point.

The temperature at nearby Austin-Bergstrom International Airport at the time was 98 degrees with a heat index of 106 at the time of the incident.
