110 Freeway reopens in downtown LA after CHP officer-involved shooting
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- At least one California Highway Patrol officer opened fire and wounded a man early Tuesday morning on the 110 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles, authorities said.
The incident prompted an hourslong closure of all northbound lanes and transition roads on the 110, between the 10 Freeway and 8th Street. The shutdown lasted until about 9:15 a.m., when the interstate was fully reopened, the highway patrol said.
CHP officers responded about 11:50 p.m. Monday to a report of a man walking in traffic lanes on the 110 in the area of Olympic Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. They approached the pedestrian and began giving him commands, the LAPD said.
"He was not following those commands," said Officer Meghan Aguilar, a spokeswoman for the police department. "He armed himself with a weapon and charged at the officers. At that point there was an officer-involved shooting involving California Highway Patrol."
News video appeared to show multiple CHP personnel rendering aid to the wounded suspect, who was then placed in an ambulance and transported to a hospital in unknown condition. It was unclear how many times the man was struck by gunfire.
No officers were reported injured.
The shooting was reported about 12:30 a.m., according to a SigAlert issued by the highway patrol.
The LAPD, whose Robbery-Homicide Division joined the investigation, said a weapon was recovered at the scene. A description of the weapon was not given.
Drivers were temporarily diverted from the 110 Freeway onto the eastbound and westbound 10 Freeway, said CHP Officer Chris Baldanado. The 8th Street entrance to the 110 remained open, along with all of the freeway's southbound lanes.
Asked how long the closure would be in effect, Baldanado replied: "We always want to make sure the investigation is thorough. So you want to make sure your tank is full of gas and so is your patience."
