HOUSTON -- What started as a high-speed police chase turned into a strange, mud-coated standoff as officers tried for about an hour to rescue the driver, who had jumped into the Brazos River, and then couldn't get out.

It's unknown what prompted the chase, but it began on W. Orem near Almeda. The driver left the main roads, cutting through construction zones and rural property in Brazoria County.

He went through a field of grass before returning to roads, such as FM 521, with at least one blown tire.
