Stolen vehicle suspect leads authorities on chase in South Los Angeles

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A possible stolen vehicle suspect led authorities on a chase through freeways and surface streets in various parts of Los Angeles County Wednesday.

The chase started in the Carson area around 5:15 p.m., according to authorities. Los Angeles police said the suspect reportedly stole the vehicle out of the LAPD Newton Division.

Authorities chased the suspect on the northbound 110 Freeway in the El Segundo area. The vehicle continued on the freeway, traveling at speeds as high as 85 mph.

The driver then exited the freeway at Slauson Avenue in South Los Angeles and headed through surface streets.

The suspect slowed down on surface streets, but continued evading police by swerving around corners and honking at people ahead of him to move.

At one point, officers used a spike strip and it appeared to puncture one of the tires, but the suspect continued driving without losing control of the vehicle.

The chase eventually headed near USC as the driver continued at slower speeds through Exposition Boulevard.

As the car continued to slow down, the suspect stopped at the corner of West 56th Street and South Figueroa Street while kids on bikes tried taking photos of him.

Authorities got out of their vehicles with their guns drawn, and the suspect threw his hands up as he surrendered to police.

The investigation was ongoing.
