3 kids, 5 adults displaced in La Verne condo fire

LA VERNE, Calif. (KABC) -- Three kids and five adults were displaced after a fire at a condominium complex in La Verne early Tuesday morning.

Firefighters with the La Verne and Los Angeles County fire departments responded to a condo in the 3000 block of Winfield Avenue around 2:40 a.m. Officials say the residents saw smoke, called 911 and then evacuated.

"My wife woke up. She's like, 'Jude, I smell smoke,' and I got up and I smelled smoke as well so I got up to check what was going on. I came down the stairs. As I came down the stairs, the smoke, it smelled heavier. There was no smoke in the house, but when I opened the door and came outside, I was looking around, I didn't see anything until I looked up above our building, that's where I saw the smoke. Once I saw the smoke, I told my wife, 'Get out of the house, there's a fire,'" resident Jude Baroudi said.

The blaze, which erupted in the attic of the condo, was knocked down at about 6:30 a.m.

No injuries were reported. A damage estimate was not immediately available and the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

Winfield Avenue was temporarily closed between College Lane and Pepper Street.
