RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (KABC) -- Three people were killed Sunday, including a Fontana man who drove head-on into another car while going in the wrong direction on the eastbound 210 Freeway in Rancho Cucamonga.

At about 2:20 a.m., the 28-year-old man was driving westbound in the carpool lane on the eastbound 210 Freeway at Day Creek Boulevard, when he crashed into a silver Hyundai carrying four people, a California Highway Patrol officer said. Both cars were smashed and debris was scattered everywhere.

The driver died from blunt force trauma to the head and torso.

In the victim's car, two women, 38-year-old Falguni Shah and 42-year-old Veena Shah, who sat in the backseat also died. The driver Nitin Shah, 60, and front-seat passenger Jyotsna Shah, 56, were taken to area hospitals.

It was unclear if alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash.

All eastbound lanes on the 210 Freeway were temporarily closed at Day Creek Boulevard for investigation. Lanes were back open by 7:30 a.m.
