Animal rights activists allege severe animal abuse in Los Angeles shelters

HANCOCK PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Animal rights activists protested in front of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti's home in Hancock Park on Sunday, alleging corruption and severe animal abuse and neglect at the city's shelters.

Demonstrators called for the dismissal of Los Angeles Animal Services General Manager Brenda Barnette.

"We're looking for a shelter system that encourages people to come to them -- that encourages people to adopt, that they're treated with respect and honor when they walk in, they feel welcomed, and that they're encouraged to keep the animal after they've had it and maybe even offer training," said Paul Darrigo, an animal activist.

Los Angeles Deputy Mayor of City Services Barbara Romero released a statement: "We are working to address these complicated animal welfare issues and support Brenda Barnette and her work in this administration. We will continue to listen and work towards solutions through the important conversations we are having with Angelenos who are passionate about the lives of animals in our city."
