HIGHLAND, Calif. (KABC) -- A man who was barricaded in a Highland residence on Osbun Road with three people inside was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon. Two kids were safely rescued.

An unidentified man called 911 to report that his wife and two kids were being held hostage by a cousin who was threatening to shoot them at a residence on the 7000 block of Osbun Road.

San Bernardino County Sheriff's personnel responded at 1:17 p.m., including a SWAT team, and contacted the man in both English and Spanish. He continued to make threats against the hostages and deputies. A SWAT team was then sent in.

Three or four shots were fired. A deputy-involved shooting was confirmed by the department.

Moments later, an infant and a female toddler were safely brought out of the residence by deputies.

A woman was found lying on the ground inside the residence. She was airlifted to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The sheriff's department said the woman's gunshot wound is consistent with the weapon the suspect had in his possession.

The children were not injured.

The male suspect was armed with a shotgun, according to the sheriff's department.

"This will be an extensive investigation. I don't know whether or not there will be any additional information today or not as I'm sure the investigation will go on throughout the night," said Jodi Miller, spokesperson for the sheriff's department.

The location was inside a residence on Osbun just south of Pacific Street. Osbun Road was closed from Fisher south to Walker during the investigation.
