EL MONTE, Calif. (KABC) -- For the second time during the holiday season, an El Monte police officer helped save a man's life with CPR.

According to police, Officer Hector Hernandez was called to Peck Road and Ranchito Street on Dec. 16, after a man who was having chest pains had gone unconscious as his wife drove him to the hospital.

Hernandez jumped into action and began CPR after discovering the man had no pulse. Hernandez continued the CPR until medical help arrived.

The man was hospitalized in the ICU and was listed in stable condition later that day.

A nurse said the man's family was extremely grateful for Hernandez's actions.

Police say it wasn't the first time the officer saved a life during the holidays. On Dec. 27, 2012, Hernandez was at the gym when he witnessed a man collapse due to a heart attack. He gave that man CPR until the fire department arrived. The man was able to make a full recovery.
