LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A state Department of Public Safety police officer assigned to Exposition Park was pistol-whipped in the head Wednesday night.

The assault took place at Vermont Avenue and Exposition Boulevard near the park's Rose Garden around 10 p.m.

Police say the officer allegedly interrupted an attack on a female. The officer was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

A search perimeter was set up as police sought two armed suspects. They were described as two black males.

The victim left the scene. Anyone with any information was urged to contact the LAPD Southwest Division.
