DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A manhunt is underway for a suspect who police say kidnapped two people from downtown Los Angeles and is holding them for ransom.
According to police, the incident occurred outside of a McDonald's restaurant at 7th and Alameda streets at about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Authorities said the suspect kidnapped the two victims and fled, demanding $8,000 from each of the victims' families. The age and identity of the victims were not immediately released.
"It's a complicated investigation, and robbery-homicide is handling the investigation, and as soon as they have information that's not going to compromise the investigation, they'll make their press releases," said LAPD Sgt. Bruce Coss.
Officials are not releasing much information at this time but say this is being investigated as a possible human smuggling case.
Investigators say the suspect is possibly heading south on the 405 Freeway toward San Diego in a 1980s BMW with a red soft top and red rims.
The suspect is described as Hispanic man between 20 and 25 years old, 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing about 165 pounds. The suspect was last seen wearing a Monster Energy hat with a red striped sweater and blue jeans.
It was first reported that one "kidnap for ransom" victim was located. Police later said no one was found.
