LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles city leaders marked the one-year anniversary of the deadly shooting attack at LAX Saturday.
The ceremony was held at the airport's Terminal 3, where Transportation Security Administration Officer Gerardo Hernandez was killed and included a moment of silence at 9:20 a.m., the time Paul Ciancia began shooting.
L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti joined Hernandez's family along with TSA employees for the event.
TSA Administrator John Pistole said in a statement that Hernandez was "a dedicated, well-liked and respected employee, and a devoted husband and father. As our first fallen officer, his loss serves as a poignant reminder of how dangerous today's world is."
Hernandez's killing was the TSA's first line-of-duty death since the agency's inception in 2001.
Two other officers and a passenger were wounded.
"It's just not the one-year anniversary, every time I walk through those escalators ever morning and see that spot my eyes get watery," TSA officer Danielle Rocha said. "It's hard for all of us still as if it was yesterday."
Ciancia, 39, has been charged in the shooting. Law enforcement sources say Ciancia, a U.S. citizen, carried a note with him that suggested he was anti-government and expected to die in the airport shootout.
The note said he believed his constitutional rights had been violated by TSA searches, that he was a "patriot" upset at former Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, and that he wanted to kill "TSA and pigs."
He has pleaded not guilty to 11 federal charges, including murder of a federal officer.
