LYNWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- A small rally was held in Lynwood Sunday to protest police brutality in memory of Johnathan Cuevas, who was shot and killed by a Los Angeles sheriff's deputy in 2010.

Friends, family and community members showed their support by holding signs and demanding change.

"We lift up our voices to denounce all these murders and really ask for a change in the police culture that allows for this to keep happening in our communities," Lynwood resident Juliet Ovalle said.

Cuevas' family won a wrongful death settlement last year, but they have called for the firing of Julio Jove, the deputy who shot Cuevas. The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office confirmed that Cuevas was shot both in the back and front of his body.

Jove has since been promoted to a detective position.
