Man in custody after standoff, assault on officer in Long Beach
A suspect is in custody on Saturday after an hours-long standoff with police that began as an assault on an officer in Long Beach.

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspect is in custody on Saturday after an hours-long standoff with police that began as an assault on an officer in Long Beach.

Police said an officer stopped the suspect at Houghton Park at about 2 a.m. when a fight broke out. The officer was struck in the face with a hand gun by the man, who then barricaded himself in a nearby home on Harding Street and Atlantic Avenue.

Surrounding neighbors were evacuated and the SWAT team was called in.

SWAT officers were able to take the man into custody without injuries at about 7:30 a.m.

The assaulted officer was expected to be OK.
