Newborn abandoned in toilet at West Covina Subway in good condition

WEST COVINA, Calif. (KABC) -- An infant left inside a Subway restaurant in West Covina was listed in good condition Tuesday after his mother abandoned him minutes after birth.

Mary Grace Trinidad was arrested on Monday for attempted murder and child abandonment after customers and restaurant employees heard a baby's cry in the bathroom and found the screaming infant boy sitting upright, partially submerged in cool water.

The incident happened at a Subway in the 2500 block of S. Azusa Avenue. Authorities said the woman entered the Subway and went into the restroom.

Customers and workers told police they heard a woman screaming in the bathroom for about 15 minutes before she walked out of the restaurant bleeding.

When frightened employees located the infant, they immediately grabbed him and called 911.

The 911 dispatcher coached an employee to get towels to wrap the baby in and to check his mouth.

The baby, who appeared to be at full term, was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in critical condition.

Authorities followed the trail of blood out to the back of the restaurant and found Trinidad, a 38-year-old local transient, at Pep Boys.

She was taken to the hospital for health issues related to her pregnancy, and remains in the hospital for treatment.

Trinidad had a warrant out for her arrest on narcotics charges at the time, police said.

West Covina police released surveillance video showing Trinidad entering the restaurant bathroom and leaving 10 minutes later.

Police said the intent of the video release is to bring more awareness to the Safe Surrender Baby Law, which encourages parents with lawful custody to safely surrender an infant within 72 hours of birth. To learn more, visit www.babysafe.ca.gov.
