STANTON, Calif. (KABC) -- An area of Stanton was evacuated Monday morning after a bank robbery suspect threatened he had explosives in his vehicle when he was pulled over by deputies at Katella and Western avenues.

Hazardous-device personnel searched the vehicle and found no explosives, only cash believed to be from the robbery. The suspect was arrested.

Orange County sheriff's deputies responded to the robbery at the Bank of the West branch at 11051 Beach Boulevard in Stanton at about 10:44 a.m.

The robbery suspect, 62-year-old Stanton resident Danny Ray Worrell, threatened a bank teller with a note indicating he was armed with explosives and a gun, according to the sheriff's department.

Worrell took cash and was seen leaving in a maroon Chevrolet Corvette. Deputies stopped the car near Katella and Western avenues. As Worrell was taken into custody, he made threats that there were explosives in the car, the department said.

The area was evacuated and the department's Hazardous Device Squad responded and performed a remote search of the car with a robot, then a more extensive search in person. No explosives were located.

Cash believed to be from the robbery was found in the car.

Worrell was arrested for robbery and booked at the Santa Ana City Jail on federal charges. He was held without bail and was expected to appear in court on Tuesday. He was not suspected to be connected to any other recent bank robberies, the sheriff's department said.
