San Bernardino man crashes into police officer, cruiser

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) -- A San Bernardino man who tried to flee after crashing into a police officer and car was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Steven Portillo, 18, allegedly made a left turn at 5th Street and Mt. Vernon Avenue at about 10:40 p.m. Monday in San Bernardino. Authorities allege Portillo crashed into a police officer responding to a vandalism call and a police cruiser. The officer was arresting a vandalism suspect.

Portillo attempted to flee from the scene, but was apprehended.

The officer received moderate to severe injuries. Both the officer and Portillo were taken to a hospital.
