ONTARIO, Calif. (KABC) -- A sheared fire hydrant flooded a Chevron gas station in Ontario and caused the roof to collapse on Tuesday morning.

Authorities responded to Holt Avenue and Mountain Street at about 7 a.m. It only took a matter of minutes for the rooftop over the pumps to come crashing down.

"It sounded like twisting metal, metal twisting, and by the time I got up here it already settled down on the ground," said Mario Alvarez, a witness.

Alvarez says the driver of a dump truck was trying to maneuver through the parking lot when he got a little too close to the fire hydrant and clipped it, sending water shooting up nearly 80 feet into the air.

"I felt sorry for the guy. I'm sure it started his day off terrible," he said.

Crews quickly turned off the gas pumps and water. The gas station was expected to be closed for at least a day as repairs get underway.

Police say a small sinkhole also formed. Crews were able to fill the hole with dirt.

No injuries were reported from the incident.
