San Diego standoff suspect in custody, ground stop lifted at airport

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KABC) -- A ground stop has been lifted at San Diego International Airport Wednesday afternoon after a suspect armed with a long-range rifle was taken into custody following a standoff with police.

Police responding to a domestic violence call heard gunshots near West Kalmia and Brant streets in the Bankers Hill neighborhood at about 10 a.m.

Officials said the man, identified by police as 33-year-old Titus Colbert, opened fire sporadically inside a nearby apartment complex, causing SWAT officers to swarm the building.

Police said Colbert surrendered peacefully.

No injuries have been reported. Authorities urged people in the area to stay inside and away from windows during the standoff.

City Tree Christian School was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the complex is under the airport's approach path, which is why flights were not allowed to land but departures were allowed to take off.

Los Angeles International Airport PR Director Nancy Castle said one flight was diverted from San Diego to LAX. Castle said the flight from Canada deplaned in Los Angeles and waited to take off again for San Diego.
