Sports anchor Kyle Kraska, shooting suspect know each other: police
CBS News 8 sportscaster Kyle Kraska and the man suspected of shooting him outside his home know each other, investigators said.

SAN DIEGO (KABC) -- CBS News 8 sports director Kyle Kraska and the man suspected of shooting him were involved a business dispute, police said Wednesday.

San Diego police said the dispute centered around the suspect's painting of Kraska's home. No other details were released.

Mike Montana, 54, is accused of opening fire on Kraska, 48, Tuesday afternoon. Police allege Montana fired multiple shots through the rear window of Kraska's silver Mercedes-Benz outside Kraska's Scripps Ranch home. Witnesses said they heard at least eight gunshots.

Area resident Bill Feather was driving by when he saw Kraska in the street.

"They started putting pressure on the wound. They were saying it was a shooting. People were saying, 'He was shot, he was shot,'" Feather said.

Kraska was shot in the leg and stomach. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. He remains in the hospital, but CBS News 8 posted on Twitter that the sports anchor is on the road to recovery.

Police quickly identified Montana as the suspected shooter, though they didn't immediately say why. SWAT tracked Montana down, and he surrendered after an hours-long standoff in El Cajon.

Montana's former neighbor said he believes Montana may have been on psychotropic medication at one point and was living illegally in a storage unit.

Federal court records show Montana filed for bankruptcy protection last year. His state business license was suspended in 2013 for nearly $2,000 in unpaid fees.

Montana is being held without bail. He was booked into jail on suspicion of first degree attempted murder.

In the 1990s, Kraska briefly anchored for KCBS-TV in Los Angeles and worked on the show "Hard Copy." But he's been a fixture at Channel 8 in San Diego since 1999. He's well known for his big personality and for his years of work covering the San Diego Chargers.

Scripps Ranch is an affluent suburb of San Diego with a very low crime rate.
