Stretch of 5 Freeway to be renamed for slain Downey Officer Ricardo Galvez

DOWNEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A stretch of the Santa Ana Freeway in Downey will be renamed in memory of slain police officer Ricardo "Ricky" Galvez.



The 29-year-old Downey police officer was shot and killed in the parking lot of the police department during a botched robbery in November 2015.

Family members, friends and colleagues of slain Downey police Officer Ricardo 'Ricky' Galvez remembered him Monday morning as a humble, hard-working man with an infectious smile.


The roadway along the 5 Freeway between the San Gabriel River Bridge and the Rio Hondo River Bridge will be known as the Downey Police Officer Ricardo Galvez Memorial Highway.



The state Senate approved the plan. The resolution now heads to the Assembly.
