LYNWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- A deputy was shot in the shoulder during a confrontation with a suspect in Lynwood on Tuesday. SWAT deputies began a search for the suspect, which evolved into a barricade situation.

At approximately 4:15 p.m. a man believed to be the suspect was seen running and appeared to be shot by SWAT deputies. According to the sheriff's department, the suspect came out of the apartment building armed with a handgun, and SWAT deputies shot him. Paramedics treated the man at the scene, where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The shooting that spurred the search began just after 1 p.m. near Peach Street and El Segundo Boulevard. Two deputies went to the apartment complex on the 12000 block of Santa Fe Avenue earlier in the day for a follow-up investigation, whereupon the suspect fired a gun, striking one deputy in the shoulder. The deputies returned fire, and the man retreated inside.

The wounded deputy, a 17-year veteran, was hospitalized at St. Francis Medical Center in stable condition and was expected to fully recover.

The armed suspect had last been seen in the 12000 block of Santa Fe Avenue and was believed to be barricaded in a nearby residence. A suspect description was not immediately available.

Schools in the area were briefly locked down as a precaution, but the lockdowns have since been lifted.
