BELLFLOWER, Calif. (KABC) -- Authorities took a suspect into custody Thursday night following a deputy-involved shooting in Bellflower earlier in the day, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The department's Special Enforcement Bureau tweeted at 9:44 p.m. that tear gas was deployed, and the suspect was taken into custody.

The deputy-involved shooting took place shortly before 3 p.m. near Foster Road and Woodruff Avenue.

Deputies responded to the area after receiving a call about a man with a gun. When they tried to make contact with a man crossing the street, he pulled out a handgun and shot several rounds at deputies, authorities said.

At least one deputy fired back as they took cover, according to sheriff's officials. No deputies were injured.

It was not immediately known if the suspect was hit. Officials said he ran into a nearby residential area.

A stretch of Woodruff Avenue was shut down, and deputies went door-to-door searching for the suspect before he was found hiding in a garage, authorities said.

The unidentified suspect was transported to a hospital to get checked out. Once discharged, he was expected to be booked into jail on a charge of attempted murder on a peace officer.

Anyone with information was asked to call the L.A. County Sheriff's Department's Lakewood Station at (562) 623-3500.
