SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KABC) -- A 40-year-old suspect died after being shot with a stun gun by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer at the San Ysidro Port of Entry on Christmas Eve.

The incident began at about 3 p.m. when the U.S. citizen applied for entry into the U.S. at the pedestrian processing station.

After a background check determined the man was wanted on a felony charge, he was escorted into a security office for questioning.

During a pat down, officers found he was carrying heroin. As officers were reviewing his criminal history and preparing to arrest him, the suspect jumped over a counter and attacked an inspector.

The suspect was shot with a stun gun after numerous attempts to restrain the suspect, who continued to resist, failed. The suspect shortly became unresponsive.

Authorities attempted CPR on the man, who was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. His name has not been released pending notification of kin.

Four Border Patrol agents were hospitalized with moderate injuries.
