ONTARIO, Calif. (KABC) -- Friends and family gathered Sunday night at a candlelight vigil to remember a pedestrian killed in an Ontario crosswalk.

John Cuevas, 29, was walking with a friend through the intersection of Inland Empire Boulevard and North Center Avenue at about 2:40 p.m. when he was struck by a driver who ran a red light.

Cuevas was airlifted to a nearby hospital, but did not survive his injuries.

Witnesses say Cuevas died a hero, shoving his friend, Allan Burdwell, out of the way.

"The last thing I remember was my friend saying, 'watch out,' and I felt a little shove and I thought he was messing around and I looked behind me, and right when I looked behind me he looks the other way and he gets hit right away," Burdwell said.

Ontario police tell Eyewitness News they are still in the preliminary stage of the investigation. It's unclear if the driver will be arrested.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for his funeral services.
