DOWNEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A woman is recovering after she was hurt trying to help put out a house fire that sent large flames shooting out from several windows of the Downey home.

The Downey Fire Department received a call about the fire in the 9600 block of Telegraph Road at 3:02 a.m. When firefighters arrived, flames and smoke were showing.

The fire was knocked down quickly, but flames caused extensive damage to the house.

Officials believe the fire started in a back bedroom. There were two occupants, a man and a woman.

The woman taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.

The male resident tried to fight the fire with a garden hose.

"The garden hose wasn't enough. Good thing I had my neighbors. I really appreciate my neighbors," said Downey resident Victor Revelez. "Without them, it would have spread."

Revelez said his partner may have been smoking in bed, and that may have caused the fire.

The fire remains under investigation.
