Dogs in need of homes before construction at Simi Valley Adoption Center

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- Twenty-five dogs are in need of relocation immediately before construction begins at the Simi Valley Adoption Center.

The Simi Valley Adoption Center is the largest no-kill shelter in the state. Construction to expand the current holding facility is scheduled to begin next week.

"During construction, it's really loud," said Randy Friedman, the marketing manager at Ventura County Animal Services. "It's not good for them (the dogs). It's going to drive them crazy and we need to get them out."

If the dogs are not fostered or adopted soon, it poses a big challenge to the shelter.

"We get creative. Unfortunately, some of the dogs will be housed together," said Friedman. "And that by no means is what we should be doing."

It has been especially difficult for pit bulls at the shelter to find a forever home. Knockout, a 5-year-old pit bull, has been in the kennel for two years.

Chloe Williamson, who works at Ventura County Animal Services, explained that people who've come to the shelter just didn't want a pit bull or it was because of their homeowner's insurance.

"My plea is to foster! If you can't adopt, foster a dog," said Williamson. "Fostering is a big deal. We're trying to get these guys at least out for a break."

All this month's adoption fees will be waived to anyone looking to give dogs like Knockout a forever home.
