RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) -- This week's ABC7 Cool Kid is Nicolas Ruddy, who helps provide medical care to low-income families and volunteers with Riverside police.

The 15-year-old volunteers with the Grove Community Church mobile unit, which provides medical care to low-income families throughout the Inland Empire.

"The last event I went to with the Grove had these two doctors, optometrists, and they were handing out glasses to people and we were helping them with the fill-in forms and everything too," Nicolas explained.

In addition to his volunteer work with the medical mobile unit, Nicolas has also been involved with the Riverside Police Officers' Association for the last four years.

"My father, he's a police officer and one of the bigger things we've done is we filled backpacks with school supplies for kids that couldn't afford them," Nicolas said.

"In one year we filled 1,200 backpacks and he was there from start to finish," Rose Marie Lane with the Riverside Police Department said.

The Riverside teen hopes to one day become a doctor, but for now, Nicolas said he enjoys volunteering and spending time with his family.
