HUNTINGTON BEACH and NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- See photos of people across the Southland celebrating the Fourth of July.

Thousands flocked to the beaches to escape the heat and take part in parades and festivities celebrating the nation's birthday.

At Huntington Beach, more than 200,000 lined the streets to watch a parade. Those at Newport Beach watched boats and a man with a jet pack show off his patriotic colors in the annual boat parade.

The night was capped off with fireworks across Southern California and the nation.
