Avery Davis, No. 72 in ESPN Junior 300, commits to Notre Dame

Avery Davis, the No. 4-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2017, is heading out of state.

A Dallas-area junior, Davis committed to Notre Dame on Saturday. He picked the Fighting Irish over Utah, Colorado and Texas Tech while on an unofficial visit to South Bend. He is ranked No. 72 in the ESPN Junior 300 and is the No. 11 prospect in the state of Texas.

The Fighting Irish offered Davis in October 2015 and immediately became the leading candidate to land him. Davis made an unofficial visit to meet Brian Kelly and his staff in November 2015 and returned this weekend for junior day.

Davis, who is 6-foot and 190 pounds with 4.6 speed, joins Brock Wright, the nation's top-ranked tight end, as the 2017 Lone Star state prospects committed to Notre Dame. Davis is the fifth commitment for the Fighting Irish, and all five are in the ESPN Junior 300. The class, made up entirely of offensive prospects so far, includes offensive linemen Josh Lugg and Dillan Gibbons and tight end Cole Kmet.

Davis' verbal commitment makes this the third class in the past four in which Notre Dame has landed a four-star quarterback prospect. The other QBs were Under Armour All-America Game alum Brandon Wimbush in 2015 and DeShone Kizer in 2014.

In 2016, Notre Dame finished with the No. 16 class in the ESPN class rankings. That class had 23 commitments, including six in the ESPN 300.

Davis passed for 2,148 yards with 25 touchdowns and four interceptions and rushed for 873 yards and 13 scores in 2015.
