Major League Soccer side Real Salt Lake were pushed all the way to penalties by minnows the Wilmington Hammerheads in Tuesday's U.S. Open Cup fourth round action.

Second-half goals from Joao Plata and Juan Manuel Martinez helped RSL level the score at 2-2 in regular time after Mael Corboz and Justin Moose had put the Hammerheads in front.

Jeff Attinella then made the key save for Jeff Cassar's men in the shootout, before Chris Wingert converted winning penalty to help RSL progress 3-1.

In the night's all-MLS matchup, the Portland Timbers defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0.

Dairon Asprilla and Jack McInerney ensured a smooth night for the hosts with goals in the 34th and 40th minutes respectively.

Meanwhile at the StubHub Center, the LA Galaxy eventually overcame La Máquina FC 4-1 in extra-time.

Jose Villarreal had the Galaxy in front early, but after Rafael Garcia received a red card for violent conduct in the 17th minute, LA played the majority of the match with 10 men.

Edwin Borboa exploited the one man advantage in the 28th minute with a well-taken strike, but La Maquina were unable to find a winner in normal time.

David Romney then broke the deadlock in extra-time, slotting home a goal from Baggio Husidic's set-piece, before substitute Sebastian Lletget added a brace in the closing stages.

In Tuesday's other match, the Colorado Rapids won 1-0 against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.
