ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Right-hander Jesse Chavez can earn up to $2.5 million in bonuses based on starts in his deal with the Los Angeles Angels.

Chavez has a $5.75 million salary under the agreement announced Friday. He would earn $100,000 each for 10, 12 and 14 starts, $150,000 apiece for 16 and 18, $200,000 for 20, $250,000 apiece for 22 and 24, $300,000 for 26, $400,000 for 28, and $500,000 for 30.

The 33-year-old California native went 2-2 with a 4.43 ERA in 62 games last season for Toronto and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He pitched exclusively as a reliever at the start of his career and again last season but started 47 games over the 2014 and 2015 seasons for Oakland.

Chavez is likely to compete for a spot in the Angels' starting rotation, which has lost depth because of injuries. Matt Shoemaker, Tyler Skaggs and Ricky Nolasco are in the rotation along with ace Garrett Richards.
