USC's Juju Smith-Schuster having hand surgery, could play Saturday

USC interim coach Clay Helton said receiver Juju Smith-Schuster was having surgery Monday on the fractured right hand he sustained in Saturday's 27-21 win against Cal.

The receiver may not miss any games, as he could be back in time for Southern Cal's game Saturday night against Arizona.

"We're going to have surgery this afternoon that will speed up his recovery process," Helton said Monday. "Obviously everybody heals differently." Helton added that recovery time for such an injury "has been as soon as three days or it could take longer. When he's healthy and he feels like he can go back out there, he will."

The injury occurred during a kickoff return in the first quarter, but the Pac-12's leading receiver still finished with a team-high five catches for 55 yards, all coming after the injury.

Smith-Schuster has 52 catches for 956 yards and eight touchdowns on the year. No other USC receiver has as many as 20 catches, and the team's second-leading receiver is Adoree' Jackson (19 catches), who is primarily a cornerback.

The injury is the latest blow for a receiving corps that has been hit hard by injuries this season. Isaac Whitney is out for the season with a broken collarbone, and Darreus Rogers and Steven Mitchell had just returned from injuries for the Cal game.

True freshman Deontay Burnett had three catches against Cal and led the Trojans with 82 receiving yards.
