LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- New statistics from the California Highway Patrol show just how crazy the roads really were Tuesday.

Nearly 275 crashes were reported in Los Angeles County alone, all between 5 and 9 a.m.
For comparison, the number of crashes during that same time last week was only 30.
Tuesday's crashes included an overturned big rig in the early morning that shut down the 5 Freeway in Atwater Village and left a person dead and another big rig accident in which the truck hurtled over the side of the 5 Freeway connector north of Sun Valley onto the roadway below.
Many of the reported crashes were likely rain related.
