Long Beach police cracking down after spike in pedestrian deaths
A seventh pedestrian has been killed in Long Beach this year, and police are cracking down with more warning and citations in an effort to raise awareness.

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- A seventh pedestrian has been killed in Long Beach this year, and police are cracking down with more warning and citations in an effort to raise awareness about safety.

If the city's pace of pedestrian deaths continues, the rate will double that of last year.

Pedestrians should "use the intersections, follow the red lights, the walk signals. With drivers, make sure you give yourself enough lead time, so if something does pop out in the road in front of you, you have reaction time. You are able to stop fast enough to avoid a collision," Long Beach Police Lt. Kris Klein said.

Klein says these habits save lives and that pedestrian accidents are 100 percent preventable.
