LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A new $1.6 billion renovation project is underway at Los Angeles International Airport.

The joint project between American Airlines and Los Angeles World Airports marks American's largest individual investment at an airport in its 92-year history.

The project is expected to generate more than 6,000 jobs.

"This is about thousands of jobs," said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. "This is about a better customer experience. This is about the No. 1 airline here at LAX."

The renovation will fully upgrade and modernize Terminal 4, creating a unified 300,000-plus square foot, 28-gate complex for Terminals 4 and 5, open and efficient check-in and security processing areas, and a secure side bridge connecting Terminal 4 and the Tom Bradley International Terminal.

Outside, traffic congestion is being addressed with an automated people mover train system that will transport air travelers into the upgraded terminals.

The massive project won't happen all at once. It will be spread out into several phases over the next 10 years and should be completed just in time for the 2028 Summer Olympics here in Los Angeles.
