The blaze broke out on a hill around 1:30 a.m. along the 405 at Getty Center Drive. It quickly burned more than 600 acres.

The California Highway Patrol said homes in the area were being threatened, and multiple homes went up in flames as firefighters continued to battle the intense blaze.
Mayor Eric Garcetti said people should be prepared to be out of their homes Tuesday night as well because the winds are expected to pick back up again in the evening.
EVACUATIONS
The area between Sunset Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway, and between Temescal Canyon Road and Chautauqua Boulevard have been changed from a voluntary evacuation zone to a evacuation preparedness zone.
Mandatory evacuations:
-Mountaingate and Mandeville Canyon communities. Update: The Mountaingate community was allowed to repopulate Monday evening.
-Mount Saint Mary's University at 12001 Chalon Rd.
-Carondelet Center, a senior living community, at 11999 Chalon Rd.
Topanga Canyon is under voluntary evacuations.
The borders of the Mandatory evacuation zone are:
-Temescal Canyon Road is the West border
-Sunset Boulevard is the South border
-Mulholland Drive is the North border
-405 Freeway is the East border

POST OFFICE CLOSURE: The Pacific Palisades Post Office at 15234 La Cruz Drive is temporarily closed. The Postal Service says it has no access to the building.

OUTAGES
As of 7 a.m., about 900 customers were without power due to the blaze, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The affected area included Bel Air, Brentwood and Westwood. It is unclear when power will be restored. Southern California Edison turned off power for nearly 16,000 customers earlier in the week as a preemptive measure, with over 304,000 under considerations for shutoffs.

Southern California is bracing for the return of Santa Ana winds as it remains under red flag conditions Monday. Several blazes ravaged the area last week as the combination of Santa Ana winds, low humidity and hot temperatures created dangerous fire conditions.
It was not immediately known what caused the fire.
