Palisades, Eaton fires largest on record for January in California

Wildfires burning in Pacific Palisades and Altadena are now considered the largest fires on record for the month of January in California.

The Palisades Fire grew to 15,832 acres within 24 hours. The Eaton Fire grew to 10,600 acres. The next largest for the month was the Viejas Fire in 2001 which burned just over 10,000 acres.

From 1950 to 2024, there were 15 wildland fires over 1,000 acres and just two fires over 5,000 acres in January.
