Tar balls continue washing ashore on Southland beaches
Tar balls and oil continues to wash ashore along beaches across the Southland weeks after the Refugio oil spill, but experts have yet to determine the cause.

OXNARD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Tar balls and oil continues to wash ashore along beaches across the Southland weeks after the Refugio oil spill, but experts have yet to determine the cause.

At Zuma Beach, large globs of tar were collected Tuesday for testing after Los Angeles County lifeguards found the substance just after sunrise. The sample was sent to Sacramento for chemical analysis.

It remains unclear if the black substance seen as far south as Redondo Beach is from the oil spill, natural seepage in the ocean floor or even passing ships.
