LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Metrolink is lowering fares in 2016 in order to encourage riders to take more local trips on trains.
Beginning Jan.1, Metrolink is reducing the price of one-way, short-distance tickets to as low as $3 and $1.50 for seniors.
The $3 fare is good for up to two stations - for example, riding one-way from California State University, Los Angeles to Union Station.
Metrolink says the new fare is a 45 percent discount to the current average of $5.50 for a one-way ticket between stations.
It's hoping to encourage more local trips using Metrolink to complement local bus service.
